The rising popularity of fresh and healthy leafy vegetables among young Asian consumers is creating a fast-growing market for hydroponically grown ‘leafies’. To share the latest insights into this market, Rijk Zwaan is organising a free two-hour Leafy Hydroponics Event on 5 September, one day before Asia Fruit Logistica starts. To hear expert views on three topics – market trends, technology and sales & marketing – join us at this unique event!
The Leafy Hydroponics Event kicks off with an overview of the global leafy greens landscape and convenience market trends by Bauke van Lenteren, Marketing and Leafy Green Specialist at Rijk Zwaan. Friso Klok, Rijk Zwaan Area Sales and Chain Manager for South East Asia, subsequently looks at developments in the hydroponics market specifically in the Asian region.
What are the most promising new technological solutions for hydroponically grown leafies in the Asian market? In the event’s second session, four hardware experts – Manuel Madani from greenhouse tech company Priva, Rani Bassil from substrate specialist Klasmann-Deilmann, Kurt Cornelissen from installation company Hortiplan NV, and Craig D'Souza from lighting expert Philips Horticulture LED Solutions – discuss best practices suitable for the local market, share their learnings and challenges and give insights in their future vision of this market.
A panel discussion rounds off the Leafy Hydroponics Event, with four successful Asian companies explaining how they operate in their respective markets. They each share their vision, the latest product developments and future plans in terms of sales & marketing. The four inspiring businesses are:
Giant Singapore – part of DFI Retail Group – a commitment to service
Operating 10,700 outlets in 13 Asian markets and territories, the DFI Retail Group is a leading pan-Asian retailer delivering quality and value to Asian consumers by offering leading brands, a compelling retail experience and great service. Product Manager for Produce Yoon Chyi Fong will provide retail and consumer insights of the leafy category in Singapore.
AquaGreen Hong Kong – planting the seeds for a better future
Aquagreen is a hydroponic company based in Hong Kong that specializes in growing fresh, flavorful, and pesticide-free greens using innovative hydroponic technology. They offer a variety of salad greens, fruit veggie and supply produce to restaurants and hotels in Hong Kong. In 2012, Aquagreen was founded by Tracey Lam and Ricky Lau. Over the past 11 years, Tracey and her team have created a successful farming business and built an all-green, market-dominant brand. Tracey Lam will share her market success stories during the panel discussion.
Nutrifresh Farms – transforming the future of food
Driven by a strong passion for agriculture, friends Sanket Mehta and Ganesh Nikam decided to leave their successful careers to found Nutrifresh Farms in 2016. At their farms, based in Pune, India, the sustainable and innovative farming practices are exemplary and defining new industry standards. Combining indegenised technology with agriculture, Nutrifresh has taken the lead in hydroponic farming, revolutionising the way it grows and distributes fresh produce. At the Leafy Hydroponics Event, Ms Varija Khanna, Deputy General Manager of Nutrifresh, will discuss how the company is helping to transform the future of food in India.
@Live Well – excellent taste without compromise
Asian consumers are increasingly opening up to healthy eating and are looking for food with fewer calories and less use of chemicals. With this in mind, since being founded in Malaysia in 2007 by Champ Fungi Sdn Bhd, Live Well has been on a quest to become the leading ready-to-eat salad producer in Asia. The company is all about delivering excellent taste without compromise, as Robin Yau, Director of Sales & Marketing, will explain during the panel discussion.

In these uncertain times, it is important to get the basics right. To build a firm foundation for this, Rijk Zwaan consolidates its core strengths: robust, resilient and reliable solutions for fresh vegetables. One example is its range of new tomato varieties with unique high resistance (HR) against the Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV). Another example is Alzamora RZ – a high-quality red pepper variety for greenhouse cultivation that performs exceptionally well, even at lower temperatures. And Rijk Zwaan’s solutions extend beyond varieties alone. The vegetable specialist also secures sourcing strategies by bringing retailers and growers together, for example.
Meanwhile, its online consumer platform Love My Salad provides delicious recipe ideas to help people cook affordable meals containing lots of vegetables. This is just one way in which Rijk Zwaan continues to inspire consumers to make healthy food choices, even during economically challenging times.
Besides tackling today’s challenges, Rijk Zwaan keeps on moving forward by launching inspiring innovations that stimulate new choices for a Fresh Future. One highlight is the unique snack pepper Tatayoyo. Its flavour explosion sparks a sense of tropical adventures from the very first bite. Meanwhile, the attractive Marmande beefsteak tomato Tafury RZ stands out thanks to its irresistible taste and eye-catching appearance. These and many more examples of how Rijk Zwaan keeps you fresh and future-facing will be on display in Berlin.

Rijk Zwaan’s Hydroponics Leaf and Outdoor demos are on the agenda again in June, showcasing the vegetable breeding company’s new, colourful and high-tech vegetable varieties. In fact, both demos will run in parallel from 13-24 June, with the Outdoor demo then continuing until 1 July. During the Hydroponics Leaf Demo, Rijk Zwaan’s living lettuce concepts Salatrio® and Salanova® will be put in the spotlight. Other eye-catchers will be the company’s high-density Salanova Teenleaf and a new variety with burger-sized lettuce leaves. Meanwhile, the Outdoor Demo will highlight Rijk Zwaan’s extensive range of leafy varieties and the attractive cauliflower varieties with magnetising colours and shapes.
This year’s displays will be based around three main hydroponic lettuce concepts: 1) The appealing and versatile combinations of Salatrio – a colourful living lettuce concept featuring an abundance of tasty leaves, enabling retailers to add more colour and diversity to the shelf and attract shoppers from across the store; 2) High-density Salanova Teenleaf – an entire range of mid-sized leaf varieties that are machine harvestable and available in a wide choice of attractive colours, textures and leaf shapes; and 3) Rijk Zwaan’s burger leaf variety with a high count of burger-sized leaves that can easily withstand heat and acidity. Furthermore, Rijk Zwaan is looking forward to welcoming visitors to its new and inspiring location in Dinteloord for valuable and stimulating discussions regarding existing and new hydroponic projects.
In parallel with the Hydroponics Leaf Demo, Rijk Zwaan will also organise its Outdoor Demo to showcase its extensive range of leafy varieties. Besides that, the company will present its colourful cauliflower varieties with magnetising colours and shapes. Still on the topic of brassicas, Rijk Zwaan’s innovative Pb Defense varieties are another of the high points at the demo. These include cauliflower varieties with strong resistance against clubroot.
The Rijk Zwaan team members are looking forward to welcoming industry professionals to the demos to present the highlights and inspire them with the broad range of varieties suitable for hydroponics and/or soil. For both demos, visitors are recommended to schedule a meeting in advance so that the visit can be tailored to their needs.
